Mission Statement

Our goal is to provide undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to develop scholarly writing skills to help build a successful career in their line of work. We want to be able to introduce students to the process of submission, review, and revision in an academic publishing environment. Students can take on many roles which include authors, reviewers, editors and social media managers. BSJ’s goal is to focus on structure, format, and context rather than grades, deadlines or exams.

Aims & Scope of the Journal

Bioengineering Student Journal (BSJ) is a student-run journal supported by the Department of Biomedical Engineering at University of Illinois at Chicago. For over ten years the journal has brought forward cutting-edge research focused on biomedical engineering and bioengineering. It is an open access journal that publishes quality work followed by a rigorous review process by the reviewers and the editors. The scope of the journal includes but not limited to: Imaging, implants, Use of spectroscopic techniques, nanotechnology and nanomedicine, mathematical modeling.

Strengths of the Journal

Strengths Appealing to Researchers

  • Doctoral researchers can use this platform to practice publishing their works by submitting parts of their research/data and through writing summaries of their research. They would gain experience in scientific writing without going through the publishing process of an external agency with little to no consequences (financially or otherwise).
  • We are an established journal running for over ten years, thus we have a proper and rigorous review process composed of reviewers and editors.
  • Currently, we are trying to become an accredited journal – at the moment registering for an ISSN ID.
  • Since we are an open access journal, researchers can expand the visibility of their research – more particularly expand the visibility of their research within the UIC bioengineering student population.
  • This also allows for the bioengineering student population to see and understand the type of research happening currently at UIC, which can help motivate students to pursue research and research opportunities.

Strengths Appealing to Students

  • Review Competition/Awards
  • We are a smaller, but rapidly expanding organization. Therefore we have a lot of flexibility in our roles and jobs, allowing for greater opportunities to learn about scientific writing and the publication process. Skills that prove invaluable when pursuing a career in research.
  • Exposure to various types of bioengineering research, helping students to learn more about the vast field and to find their own interests.
  • We are currently trying to expand the reach of our journal (i.e becoming an accredited journal and student organization, trying to expand it to a multi-department journal, etc.), and thus, we have a lot of opportunities for growth and development. (aka looks great on a resume)
